The Federal Report on physician assisted dying has been released. The panel was chaired by Harvey Chochinov (Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care at the University of Manitoba, and Director of the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit, Cancer Care Manitoba). He was joined by Catherine Frazee (Professor Emerita at Ryerson University) and Benoît Pelletier (Professor of Law, University of Ottawa former Liberal member of the National Assembly of Quebec, and Quebec Cabinet minister). » Read the rest

The Supreme Court of Canada has granted a 4 month extension to the Federal Government to allow it more time to draft legislation regarding physician assisted suicide. The Attorney General of Canada had requested a 6 month extension however, the majority concluded that 4 months was appropriate given the four month break that took place when Parliament was dissolved in early August in anticipation of the election and did not resume until early December. » Read the rest

Last week, the Attorney General of Canada submitted a motion to the Supreme Court of Canada to extend the deadline the Court gave in the Carter v Canada (Attorney General) judgment. On October 29, 2015, David Baker participated in the Alberta Disability Forum’s “Dialogue on Health and Physician-Assisted Dying” alongside Dr. Eric Wasylenko.

Dr. Wasylenko is a palliative care physician in the Calgary area, and a clinical ethicist with the Health Quality Council of Alberta.  He is also a member of the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta, and a Clinical lecturer at the University of Calgary. » Read the rest
