Bakerlaw Demands Government Adhere to Accessible Procurement Policies

  • October 22, 2015

Bakerlaw is currently working on bringing a case against the Federal Government for its failure to procure accessible technologies for its employees.

A few years ago, bakerlaw represented the Applicant in Jodhan v Canada (link to case)Ms.  Jodhan is visually impaired and was unable to access public Federal Government websites. These websites were not compatible with assistive technologies such as screen readers. As a result of the case, the Government was ordered to make its public websites accessible to those who use assistive technologies.

The Government implemented the Canadian Government’s Standards on Web Accessibility (link to Standards). However, this Standard only applies to public facing websites. Thus, it does not protect the rights of visually impaired Federal employees who still do not have access to accessible sites at work.

Bakerlaw intends to challenge this discrimination. We have already sent a demand letter to the Federal Government. To view the demand letter click here (link to letter).

If you or someone you know is affected by this discrimination and would like more information, feel free to contact us here (link to contact information).
