A Push for More Support for Children with Autism in Ontario Schools

  • September 8, 2016

Earlier this year, Bakerlaw took on a case to try to get Intensive Applied Behaviour Analysis (Intensive ABA) into Ontario schools for our client Jack.

Jack is a 5 year old boy who has Autism. Jack’s parents have seen how much their son benefits from Intensive ABA which is the leading approach in teaching children with autism. Like many students with autism, Jack needs Intensive ABA to have meaningful access to his education.

Bakerlaw is working with Jack’s parents who have filed a human rights application against the school board (DPCDSB). The application also included an interim remedy request. In late June, the parties agreed to a settlement with respect to the interim remedy request.

The larger issue; namely, getting Intensive ABA into Ontario schools remains unresolved. The parties are heading into a two-day mediation in late September to discuss the matter further.

Bakerlaw will be at the mediation with the assistance of leading experts in the autism field.
